Clara May, A Bright Country-Pop Storyteller Turning Summer Memories Into Song

Clara May is a warm and expressive country-pop artist with a bright, open-hearted storytelling style. Her music captures the emotional colors of youth, small-town memories, and the roads that shape who we become.

In “Backseat July,” Clara looks back on a summer love that never fully disappeared, even as life moved forward in different directions. With a free-spirited sense of nostalgia and a deeply empathetic voice, she turns old photographs, radio songs, gravel roads, and rearview lights into a heartfelt reflection on growing up, letting go, and still smiling at what once mattered.

    Backseat July

We were seventeen on a gravel road

Windows down and nowhere to go

Your old Chevy rattled every mile

But somehow it made me smile

We'd chase the sunset past the county line

Talk about forever like we had the time

A hundred dreams painted in the sky

Back when we were you and I

Funny how a town stays the same

    While everybody changes

    Backseat July

    Still lives in my mind

Like a radio song I can't leave behind

    Those streetlight nights

    Burning so bright

We thought the world was ours to find

Now every summer wind blows me back

To a photograph fading in the dash

    Backseat July

    You're still alive

    Somewhere between then and tonight

Now you're married somewhere out west

Got a little girl and a different address

I heard your name and I smiled awhile

Thinking about that old county mile

And me, I'm doing alright these days

Writing little songs on café stages

Funny how life takes different roads

But some memories never let go

Time keeps moving down the line

But some hearts never lose the signs

    Backseat July

    Still lives in my mind

Like a radio song I can't leave behind

    Those streetlight nights

    Burning so bright

We thought the world was ours to find

Now every summer wind blows me back

To a photograph fading in the dash

    Backseat July

    You're still alive

    Somewhere between then and tonight

I don't miss you the way I did

I just miss who we were back then

    Backseat July

    Still rides with me tonight

Like headlights dancing through the pines

    Those small-town dreams

    Aren't gone it seems

They're just hiding in the rearview lights

And when the radio sings that line

I swear for a moment you're by my side

    Backseat July

    Never said goodbye

Just drove on through the rest of my life

Some Summers Never Really Say Goodbye

“Backseat July” is a song I wrote about one of those memories that still feels warm, even after life has moved on.

I wanted this song to feel like driving with the windows down, hearing an old radio song, and suddenly being seventeen again for just a moment. It’s not really about wanting to go back. It’s more about being grateful for who we were, for the dreams we had, and for the people who helped make those years feel so alive.

I think some memories stay with us in a gentle way. They don’t hurt like they used to, but they still glow somewhere in the rearview mirror.

I hope “Backseat July” brings you back to a summer, a road, a person, or a version of yourself that you can remember with a smile. And I hope it reminds you that even the roads we left behind can still carry a little light.
